Swing Salsa Tango members are now FREE on weekends! Thats right, members get in free to regularly scheduled Swing, Salsa, and Tango parties, including Friday parties as well as Salsa at Madrigall on Thursdays!
Starting this Sunday, the Sunday Tango Parties are now Swing, Salsa, and Tango Parties! Three types of Music for the price of one! 6pm till 10pm so you can make an early night of it. See you there!
We are adding Lindy Hop Lessons on Tuesdays with Jake Fisher at Swing Salsa Tango! West Coast will still be offered during special weekend workshops. More information below.
Sunday Swing, Salsa and Tango Every Sunday!
Swing Dancers Sunday was reserved for Tango only but we want to make the party bigger so we will now play Swing, Salsa, and Tango. Come out and dance the cold night away with us!
Lindy Hop Class Every Tuesday!
Starting January 27th, Jake Fisher will be teaching Lindy Hop and Balboa at SST! You asked for it, you got it! The classes will replace Tuesday West Coast Classes we have offered since opening but don't worry, Kyle will continue to teach West Coast in the form of special weekend workshops at Swing, Salsa, Tango! Members Free!

Η Salsa είναι ένα συνοθήλευμα πολλών λατινικών και Αφροκαραϊβικών χορών. Κάθε ένας από αυτούς έπαιξε έναν μεγάλο ρόλο στην εξέλιξή της.
Ο όρος Salsa είναι δημιούργημα της Νέας Υόρκης, όχι όμως και ο χορός Salsa. Παρότι πρέπει να αναγνωρίσουμε την συμβολή της Κούβας για την προέλευση, την καταγωγή και τη δημιουργία της, η Salsa δεν είναι μόνο κουβανέζικη. η Salsa είναι ο αγαπημένος χορός που ενώνει τον ισπανόφωνο κόσμο. MANOLITO SIMONET, SU TRABUCO & HIS 20 PIECE CUBAN SALSA

The Band was founded on February 25, 1993, and having already started to
develop their style when various key members were part of Maravilla de
Florida, Manolito y su Trabuco was one of the first timba bands, but it
wasn't until the second wave, in 1995, that they released their first
album, Directo al corazón. In 2006, about to release their 7th album,
Hablando en serio, they've enjoyed a gradual and steady rise in
popularity and are now generally considered to be among the top three or
four true timba bands in Havana.
We strongly recommend that you see this band live if humanly possible.
Like Issac Delgado, Manolito y su Trabuco is one of those bands that you
have to see live to fully appreciate how great they are -- one of the
tightest and most powerful ensembles on the planet. They tour Europe
regularly and keep threatening to extend their touring to the US. So far
they've only played a few times in NY and Miami. Of course, they're a
regular fixture of the Havana club scene.
Manolito Simonet was the musical director and pianist for Maravilla de
Florida before forming the Trabuco. The group features a unique
instrumentation of violin, cello, flute, two trumpets and two trombones,
plus synth, piano, congas, bass and an absolute powerhouse of a drummer,
Roicel Riverón. The singing is exquisite with the incomparable Sixto "El
Indio" Llorente, singer/writer Ricardo Amaray, and newcomer "Mayami".
The first five albums also feature the wonderful Rosendo "El Gallo"
Díaz, one of the most distinctive and creative timba singers. Alexander
Fernández, now in Norway, sang on the first two albums, and Carlos
Calunga of Klímax fame sang brilliantly on Se rompieron los termómetros..
For those who love traditional Cuban music and are nervous that Timba is
a bit too modern for their tastes, Manolito (as well as Los Que Son Son,
Orquesta Revé, and Adalberto Alvarez), provide the clearcut entryway to
the glories of Cuban music in the 90's and 00's. They combine the
authentic flavor of Son with the raw, African fury of Timba in a way
that leaves everyone deeply satisfied.

Modern singers and bands mix Salsa and other musical genres... like hip hop... is the result Salsa????
Salsa music is based on clave... Victor Manuelle doens't use the clave... are his songs Salsa?
To us it's the clave-based rhythm that makes salsa salsa. The clave beat does not have to be played out; it can be implied by the rhythm pattern of other instruments. Salsa doesn't have to be played by a salsa band to be salsa (and most salsa bands also play other forms of music too).

As a tree, Salsa has many roots and many branches, but one trunk that unites us all. The important thing is that Salsa is played throughout the Hispanic world and has received influences of many places within it. It is of all of us and it is a sample of our flexibility and evolution. If you think that a single place can take the credit for the existence of Salsa, you are wrong. And if you think that one style of dance is better, imagine that the best dancer of a style, without his partner, goes to dance with whomever he can find, in a club where a different style predominates. He wouldn't look as good as the locals. Each dancer is accustomed to dance his/her own style. None is better, only different. ¡¡¡Viva la variedad, ¡¡¡Viva la Salsa!!!

Salsa is not easily defined. Who invented salsa? The Cubans, Puerto Ricans? Salsa is a distillation of many Latin and Afro-Caribbean dances. Each played a large part in salsa's evolution. Salsa is similar to Mambo in that both mambo and salsa have a pattern of six steps danced over eight counts of music. Salsa and Mambo share many of the same moves. In Salsa, turns have become an important feature, so the overall look and feel are quite different form those of Mambo. Mambo moves generally forward and backward, whereas, Salsa has more of a side to side feel (cuban style Salsa).

A look at the origin of Salsa
Salsa is not only Cuban; nevertheless we must give credit to Cuba for the origin and ancestry of salsa creation. It is here where Contra-Danze (Country Dance) of England/France, later called Danzón, which was brought by the French who fled from Haiti, begins to mix itself with Rhumbas of African origin (Guaguanco, Colombia, Yambú). Add Són of the Cuban people, which was a mixture of the Spanish troubadour (sonero) and the African drumbeats and flavora and a partner dance flowered to the beat of the clave.
This syncretism also occurred in smaller degrees and with variations in other countries like the Dominican Republic, Colombia, Puerto Rico, among others. Bands of these countries took their music to Mexico City in the era of the famous films of that country (Perez Prado, most famous ...). Shortly after, a similar movement to New York occurred. In these two cities, more promotion and syncretism occurred and more commercial music was generated because there was more investment. New York created the term "Salsa", but it did not create the dance. The term salsa became popular as nickname to refer to a variety of different music, from several countries of Hispanic influence: Rhumba, Són Montuno, Guaracha, Mambo, Cha cha cha, Danzón, Són, Guguanco, Cubop, Guajira, Charanga, Cumbia, Plena, Bomba, Festejo, Merengue, among others. Many of these have maintained their individuality and many were mixed creating "Salsa".

8th Annual WSF World Professional Salsa Championships

On behalf of the Board of Directors of the World Salsa Federation, Inc., we would like to welcome everyone to the 8th Annual WSF World Professional Salsa Championships and the All-Star DanceSport Championships to be held November 6th and 7th, 2009.  This year I am sure we will celebrate with record attendance at our wonderful facility, the (TBA) Miami Florida.   If this is a return visit for you, we are glad you have chosen to join us again this year.  If you are a first time attendee, we hope you will enjoy all that the (TBA) facilities have to offer, and will make this an annual pilgrimage.

Over 2 days, competitors will have an opportunity to be World Champions in their style and then  go head to head for the title of Undisputed World Professional Salsa Champions. The Undisputed World Professional Salsa Champions will represent the best of Salsa competitive dancing, and will represent the WSF world-wide.  Also included this year will be the World Junior and Youth Salsa Championships. The youth come to this event with unsurpassed energy and enthusiasm. Come watch them compete as these young people will be our future Salsa Stars!!

El Gran Combo de Puerto Rico

El Gran Combo de Puerto Rico

Esta institución musical conocida como El Gran Combo de Puerto Rico surge tras la ruptura del Combo de Rafael Cortijo en 1962. En esa ocasión varios ex integrantes se reunieron con el empresario Rafael Alvarez Guedes con el propósito de formar un grupo musical que acompañaría al cantante dominicano Joseíto Mateo en una grabación para el sello Gema. El disco, producido bajo el título de "Menéame los mangos", contó con la participación Rafael Ithier, Eddie Pérez, Héctor Santos, Kito Vélez, Martín Quiñones, Miguel Cruz y Roberto Rohena. La agrupación, bautizada entonces por Alvarez Guedes como "El Gran Combo" se reunió nuevamente para sentar las bases de lo que sería una de las orquestas de más prestigio en el ámbito nacional e internacional.

Tras un comienzo tormentoso, la calidad de sus músicos les abrió puertas en la emisora WIAC donde iniciaron un programa radial junto a Fidel Cabrera. Poco a poco se fueron dando a conocer en los hogares puertorriqueños y el 26 de mayo de ese año hicieron su primera presentación pública en el salón Rock and Roll de Bayamón. Luego pasaron a WKAQ con Turín Llamas, donde se fraguó su debut ante las cámaras de televisión en "La Taberna India". Posteriormente debutan en el Hotel La Concha, casualmente alternando en un baile homenaje en honor a Rafael Cortijo.

Luego de esta actividad el cantante Chiqui Rivera salió del grupo y Sammy Ayala recomendó para sustituirlo un joven de Trastallares de nombre Junior Montañez. En su debut, a través de WKAQ, el cantante interpretó un número de Bobby Capó que impresionó a varios de los presentes, entre ellos a Felipe "La Voz" Rodríguez, quien le indicó que habían muchos 'Juniors' en el ambiente y que debía cambiarse el nombre por "Andy". A partir de entonces y durante los próximos 15 años, Andy Montañez, habría de convertirse en un mimado del público latinoamericano. Luego regresó Roberto Rohena y permaneció con el Combo durante siete años, cuando finalmente lo abandona para fundar sus Apolo Sound.

We are happy to keep you informed of the 2nd edition of Paris Afro Salsa Festival.
Also proud to announce that not a festival of Latin dances have been as complete.
This year Paris Afro salsa will be held from April 30 to May 3 2009 to Arpajon (91). This town near Paris promises infrastructure never equaled, but also transport near that lead quickly to Paris.
Heat, mix, friendliness, knowledge sharing, Live Music and openness to the world remain the priority of this second edition.
But this year, Paris Afro salsa will upset the established order and habits too entrenched in various festivals: To get the festival will move up a gear and go much further than last year, bringing happiness to all those who wish to discover, learn and move to relax in a warm and festive open to all professionals, amaters, children, adolescents, the festival is accessible from 3 to 77 years!
The festival does not lose sight of its difference:It will continue to be multidisciplinary mix of Afro Caribbean dances with salsa,the rumba, reggaeton, the lady style, urban dance..
This year the many workshops, through the competitive international professionals, will focus even greater autonomy: What everyone can really use everything he learned during these 4 days of intensive learning.
As announced, the surprises along the festival:
To begin with the creation of a village Latino, for the event, will caliente which ambiance we all dream! The scents of Africa, Cuba and PORTORICO propel participants in a new world: one of sharing, discovery and joy of living.
Paris Afro Salsa does not stop there: in fact it will be the first festival to discover the Kizomba, dance Cape Verde and Angola, which currently explodes in London and differents country .
To continue and to demonstrate its openness to all cultures that nurture dance, the festival will also place at the West Coast Swing, dance breaks throughout France for over a year.
Stronger still, in partnership with France 5, Paris Afro salsa is not just proud to be the first International Festival to open its doors to deaf and hearing impaired. It is therefore with great pleasure that we announce the opening of festivities in Paris by Jules Salsa Afro Turletti "signeur singer and dancer Hip-Hop deaf, semi-finalist in the show incredible talent. Isabelle Kaizergruber, salsa dancer deaf and Delphine Soyer, a professor of dance deaf and a graduate of state, speak at workshops, which will be dedicated.

Todo Latino Salsa Festival

Πραγματοποιήθηκε το τριήμερο διεθνές φεστιβάλ χορού Salsa "Todo Latino Salsa Festival", στο χώρο του ολυμπιακού ακινήτου στο Φάληρο, από τις 28 μέχρι τις 30 Νοεμβρίου 2008. Οι συμμετέχοντες είχαν την ευκαιρία να παρακολουθήσουν μαθήματα Salsa και χορευτικά shows από Eddie Torres, Tropical Gem, Super Mario, Yamulee, U-Tribe και πολλούς άλλους.
